Red Glare
Mission id=13. I've skipped some and will return, but this one
*fascinates*
The clock's counting on this one, no time for taxiway niceties, the good
people of Tel Aviv are countin' on ya!
Weapons: Four AIM-120s, two Limas, two HARMs, extra fuel.
Tactics: Switch on radar, RWS. Rein round your Hornet with A/B on
full to about four o'clock from your initial position. Mind the hangars.
You should *just* clear the grassy verges as you reach take-off speed. Head
towards nearest incoming Flanker (north-ish). Nose up, sit on your tail and
let full A/B take you up to 30,000 ft. Then jettison the tank, select
AIM-120s. You are expected to do battle with two advanced fighters, then
quickly defeat a SAM site. You'll need plenty of smash (potential energy
stored as height/speed).
Don't switch to ACM as the lead Su-27 gets within 10 miles - you need to
know precisely where the second one is at all times. Use TWS until you are
sure one is dead.
The lead Flanker fires when you are some 12-13 miles out; as he is at
4-5,000 ft, you have a 25,000 ft height advantage. Use this smash to dive
past the two incoming missiles. Loose your first AIM-120 between jinks at
about 9-10 miles out, jink the second incoming and fire your second. Should
do trick.
You should still have a 10,000 ft height advantage over second Su-27;
repeat this procedure and use Sidewinders for coup de grbce should you need
them. As soon as you nail him, switch radar to ARAD. Nearest contact should
be the SAM site (make sure it's not a downed Sukhoi.) Select HARMs, launch
at 6 miles/6,000 ft. Continue jinks. Use both to make sure. Remember the
SAM site's position as you head for Waypoint Two. Look at the clock... it
should be 10.05 if you want to ensure a successful mission.
To avoid court-martial don't cause any collateral damage on those twee
Prince of Persia dwellings (so I hear, never once having touched any of
them) Looks bad on CNN. Use gunfire, not bombs or rockets. Use GMTI radar
to acquire targets, once SAM is killed and targets are acquired, sloooow
right down, drop flaps and take good aim.
Pop one Scud, do a one-eighty, pop the second. Now onto Waypoint One - one
and two seem reverse-prioritised () Al Haig) - and hose down the third Scud
launcher trundling down to its launch site.
If you have shells left, go finish off the SAM launchers (my best is four
before running out of 20mm)
Don't bother with the enemy airbase; it has no buildings or aircraft on it.
Not worth taking extra HARMs just for those two AAA batteries.
Homeward bound (WPZ), to the eternal gratitude of the Israeli Nation!
Happy Scud-hunting,
Lt Mike
Question: Does anyone know exact time when each Scud is launched?
